The mentioned pillar measures the risks connected to congestion and unpredictable demand for travel and tourism and its impacts on the residents and the tourists. Unmanaged and unplanned tourism activities harm resources (both natural and cultural) and increase the prices of different goods and houses at tourist places. If such problems are not addressed properly, then the tourism repercussions will leave a negative impact on development. Therefore, for development, it is necessary to plan such travel and tourism activities, which will benefit the locals and enrich the tourists’ experiences.
This year, 207 permits for ascending K2 were issued. The record-breaking number of climbers reached the top of the mountain, but unfortunately, leaving behind heaps of garbage (food, human waste and plastic).
Regarding the T&T demand pressure and impact, Pakistan ranks at 2 with a score of 5 in the T&T Development Index 2021. The rank depicts the vulnerability of the country in this sector and indicates a high risk of overcrowding and unplanned tourism in the country. The problems of unplanned and overcrowded tourism activities can be understood from the Murree incident, in January 2022, which resulted in a loss of 23 lives.[276] The regulation of tourist inflow to any tourist place is crucial not only for the safety of tourists but also for the authorities and locals. Unmanaged tourist activities are also harmful to the environment, which can be seen in the eco-destruction of K2 Mountain. This year, 207 permits for ascending K2 were issued.[277] The record-breaking number of climbers reached the top of the mountain, but unfortunately, leaving behind heaps of garbage (food, human waste and plastic).[278] Data for the seasonality or the peak time of international tourist arrival in Pakistan is not available, which needs to be updated as it will help the authorities to plan and manage the tourist influx as well as control the adverse effects of tourism.
