Nicholas Untermann has been appointed General Manager of Viceroy Park Avenue, the upcoming flagship property of Viceroy Hotels & Residences in Manhattan, New York. Bringing more than 15 years of experience in luxury hospitality operations and leadership, Untermann joins the hotel ahead of its scheduled opening on February 1, 2027.
In his new role, Untermann will oversee the hotel’s operations and pre-opening preparations, including team development, operational planning and service delivery. He joins Viceroy Hotels & Residences following nearly four years with Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, where he most recently served as General Manager from January 2025 to October 2026. He initially joined Terranea in January 2023 as Resort Manager before progressing to the property’s senior leadership position. During his tenure, he contributed to the management of the 102-acre oceanfront resort, which features 582 accommodations alongside extensive dining, wellness, leisure and event facilities.
Before joining Terranea Resort, Untermann served as Director of Rooms at Ojai Valley Inn in Ojai, California, from June 2021 to January 2023. The position involved leadership within the rooms division of an established luxury resort, building on his experience in guest services, accommodation operations and departmental management.
From June 2019 to June 2021, he held the position of Director of Rooms at L’Auberge Del Mar, a luxury coastal hotel in Del Mar, California. His responsibilities in rooms leadership provided further experience in operational coordination, service standards and guest experience management within the upscale hospitality segment.
Earlier, Untermann served as Director of Operations, Beach Village at Hotel del Coronado, in San Diego, California, from February 2017 to June 2019. His role at the luxury accommodation enclave added to his experience overseeing hotel operations and delivering personalised guest services.
His professional career also includes nearly three years with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts at the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California. He joined the property as Front Desk Manager in May 2014, serving until October 2015, before advancing to Housekeeping Manager, a position he held until February 2017. These appointments provided experience across important hotel departments, including front office operations, housekeeping, team supervision and guest services.
Before joining Four Seasons, Untermann worked as Front Desk Manager at Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara, California, from June 2013 to May 2014. He also held a series of progressive leadership positions with JRK Hotel Group between 2010 and 2013, working across properties in Santa Barbara, Santa Monica and Nashville. These early hotel management roles contributed to his development in operational leadership and hospitality service delivery.
Untermann’s professional background extends beyond the hospitality industry. Before progressing into hotel management, he worked in emergency response and public service as a Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). His experience included seasonal service with the U.S. Forest Service in Santa Barbara in 2010, the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew in Prescott, Arizona, in 2009, and Groom Creek Fire District between 2008 and 2009.
Having grown up in a family of hoteliers, Untermann developed an early connection with the hospitality industry. His professional experience has since covered several operational functions, including food and beverage, valet services, front office, concierge, housekeeping and rooms management, before progressing into senior resort leadership.
Beyond his hotel management responsibilities, Untermann also serves on the Forbes Travel Guide Standards Advisory Committee, contributing industry perspectives to discussions surrounding luxury hospitality standards and service excellence.
His appointment comes as Viceroy Hotels & Residences prepares to expand its presence in New York City through Viceroy Park Avenue. The property represents an important development in the brand’s international portfolio and its return to the New York hospitality market.
With experience across luxury hotels, destination resorts, operational management and team leadership, Untermann brings an extensive hospitality background to his new position. His progression from departmental management roles to General Manager of a major luxury resort, and now to the leadership of a new flagship hotel, reflects a career developed through operational experience across several recognised hospitality properties in the United States.
Tourism Insights congratulates Nicholas Untermann on his appointment as General Manager of Viceroy Park Avenue and extends best wishes for continued success in his new leadership role.
