Pakistan, Bangladesh consider ferry service and direct shipping link

Pakistan and Bangladesh are exploring the launch of a ferry service and the establishment of a direct shipping line to strengthen trade and tourism links, Arab News reported.

The proposals were discussed during a meeting between Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and Bangladesh’s High Commissioner Iqbal Hussain Khan in Islamabad. The two sides reviewed measures to enhance maritime cooperation and expand economic engagement.

Chaudhry said a ferry service would support tourism and commercial activity, while a direct shipping line could facilitate smoother trade flows between the two countries. He added that improved maritime connectivity would contribute to regional economic integration.

Both delegations expressed commitment to deepening cooperation in the maritime sector and broadening bilateral trade. The minister said Pakistan aims to build a stronger economic partnership based on historical ties.

Pakistan and Bangladesh were part of one country until 1971, when Bangladesh emerged as an independent state following a civil war. Bilateral relations have seen renewed engagement since August 2024, after political changes in Dhaka.

Bangladesh resumed direct flights to Pakistan in January after a gap of more than a decade, marking another step in expanding connectivity between the two countries.
